Augusta Western Australia
Augusta is a town in the South West Region of Western Australia, and one of two administrative centres of the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.
The traditional owners of the area now known as Augusta are the Wardandi Noongar peoples, who have lived in the area from as early as 45,000 BCE.
Augusta was founded in 1830 thanks to settlers who had heard that most of the good land near the Swan River had already been granted.
Today Augusta is a summer holiday town where many people chose to retire to for its cooler weather and more laid back lifestyle.
Augusta has the climate of a warm-summer Mediterranean region, with an average annual rainfall just under 1000 mm. The summers are warm and mostly sunny, with considerably less rainfall, and temperatures rarely reach 30 degrees.
The town’s economic base has long been built upon its natural environment with tourism, viticulture and agriculture being the major industries. The largest agricultural sectors are livestock production and dairying, with wine also common.
