Brookton Western Australia

Brookton is a medium sized town in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia, around 150 kilometers from the state capital.

The Aboriginal name was Kalkarni, and the area was traditionally inhabited by the Kaartdijin Noongar people.

Brookton was first settled in the mid 1800’s, and was established as a town in 1890, as settlers looking to work in sandalwood cutting moved into the area.

Today Brookton is a centre for the local farming community, providing shopping and banking, as well as a bus stop on the service from Perth to Albany.

Brookton has a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, with a low annual rainfall of a little over 450mm a year on average, that is supported by nearby groundwater and streams.

Today Brookton serves as a farming community, with a host of agricultural industries operating within the Shire of Brookton, predominantly wheat and other cereal grains, and sheep graziers.
