Calingiri Western Australia

Calingiri is a wheat farming town within the Shire of Victoria Plains, in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia. Calingiri is the seat of the administrative council of the Shire of Victoria Plains.

The Yued and Ballardong people are the traditional custodians of the area, and the name Calingiri comes from the Calingiri Waterhole, though the original meaning of this word has been lost.

Europeans first began to farm the area in the early 1900’s, and the town was established in 1917, with various accepted spellings finally narrowed down to Calingiri.

A large area of land around the town has been classified as an Important Bird Area because it supports up to 20 breeding pairs of the endangered Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo.

Calingiri is home to a dry steppe climate, with hot dry summers, and cool winters with mild rainfall. The area records an average annual rainfall of just under 400mm a year, making it unsuitable for many types of agricultural use.

The dry climate and rolling plains of the Victoria Plains area lends itself perfectly to wheat growing and sheep grazing, and Calingiri, as well as surrounding towns Bolgart and Mogumber are primarily used for broadacre agricultural purposes, with a grain receival site in the town of Calingiri.
