Carnamah Western Australia

Carnamah is the name of a town and shire in the Mid-West region of Western Australia, just over 300km north of Perth, and covering a stretch of land from just east of Three Springs across to the coast at Leeman.

The traditional owners of Carnamah are the Amangu and Badymia, two Aboriginal language groups whose country respectively includes the western and eastern parts of the district.

The town was established in 1913, and named Carnamah after a local a pastoral property that had existed in the area for more than fifty years, thought the meaning is unknown.

Today, Carnamah is a hub for surrounding farming communities, with a number of heritage listed buildings, and includes then nearby town of Eneabba.

The area around Carnamah is home to a temperate, bordering on semi-arid climate region, with long, hot and dry summers making way for cold winters with little rainfall. The town records an average annual rainfall of just over 375mm, with a slight increase as you move closer to the coast.

Most of the land around Carnamah is used for broadacre farming, with the most productive industry being wheat farming, though there are also sheep, canola, barley and other grains grown in the area.
