Carnarvon is a large coastal town in the Gascoyne Region of Western Australia, at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on the Indian Ocean.
The area now known as Carnarvon was originally known as Kuwinyarardu, meaning neck of water in the language of the local Inggarda people.
Originally founded as a port and supply centre for the local region, Carnarvon has grown to be a popular tourist town.
During the 1960’s Carnarvon was home to a tracking station for NASA and also home to 12 sounding rocket launches.
Carnarvon has a warm and arid climate, with a low annual rainfall of just over 200 mm, and much of this falling from May to July. It is warm year round, with average high temperatures in the mid twenties to mid thirties all year round.
Carnarvon is home to a strong economy of mining, fishing, tourism and agriculture, with a host of agricultural activity in the region including cattle, goats, sheep and horticulture, as well as the Gascoyne River being home to growers of bananas and tomatoes who supply off season markets.
