Coolgardie Western Australia
Coolgardie is the name of a small town and shire in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, located around 550km east of Perth.
The town gets its name from the local Wangkathaa Aboriginal word for a type of Mulga tree which grew near a waterhole.
Founded in 1892 when gold was discovered in the area then known as Fly Flat, Coolgardie quickly became the third largest town in Western Australia, behind only Perth and Fremantle.
While the population today is far lower – most of it taken by Kalgoorlie shortly after Coolgardie’s founding – the town still stands, though mainly as a tourist spot today.
Coolgardie sits in a semi-arid climate region, with hot summers, and cool to cold winters. The average rainfall in Coolgardie is just over 250mm a year, and typically falls in a pretty even distribution throughout the year, though is subject to considerable variation year on year, and typically most of the rain comes from May to July.
Despite most people in Coolgardie being employed in mining, education or tourism related jobs, there are still a number of farms and hobby farms within the shire, with grazing cattle or broadacre crops being grown.
