Cowaramup Western Australia
Cowaramup is a town in the South West of Western Australia, 12 kilometres north of Margaret River in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.
The name comes from the Noongar language, and means place of the purple-crowned lorikeet, and the relation to cows and dairy farming in the region is a happy coincidence.
The townsite of Cowaramup was gazetted in 1925, to support the thriving local timber and dairy industries.
The town is famous for its cow statues, as locals leaned into the word cow being in the town name, and it is affectionately referred to as Cowtown.
The climate in Cowaramup is that of a warm-summer Mediterranean region, with an average annual rainfall of around 820 mm. Most rain falls between May and August, when around two days in three record measurable rainfall. The summers are warm and mostly sunny, with considerably less rainfall.
Unsurprisingly, the major agricultural sector in the town is cattle – mainly for dairy farming – however there is also plenty of other agricultural use in the area, from wineries to fruit and vegetables, and even some timber and herbs.
