Dandaragan Western Australia

Dandaragan is a small town and large shire in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The town is located along the Brand Highway between Perth and Geraldton.

The Yued people are the traditional owners of the area now known as Dandaragan and it gets its name from the Yued word for “good kangaroo country”.

The first Europeans moved to the area in 1850, establishing farms around a watering hole in the area, however the town was not gazetted until 1958. While the namesake of the shire, Dandaragan is significantly smaller than Jurien Bay or Cervantes.

The Shire of Dandaragan is singificant, and covers the land from just west of Mogumber and Watheroo all the way to the coast, encompassing towns like Cataby, Cervantes, Jurien Bay and Badgingarra.

Dandaragan receives significantly more rainfall than many other towns in the Wheatbelt region, thanks mostly to it being a little closer to the coast, however its semi arid climate leaves it very dry from November to April, with much of its 525mm of annual rainfall coming from June to August.

Despite the dryness of the region, or almost thanks to it, Dandaragan has seen a flourishing agricultural sector made up of beef, sheep and wheat, and even some smaller plantations of olives, citrus and stonefruit, with groundwater allowing the water to stay damper than it would in nearby areas.
