Derby Western Australia
Derby is a small town located on the edge of the King Sound, in the Kimberley Region of north west Western Australia, just over 200km from Broome.
The area is the traditional lands of the Nyikina people, and wasn’t settled by Europeans until 1883.
At one time, Perth to Derby was the world’s longest passenger airline route, and it was the destination of the first scheduled flight in Australia.
The Kimberley has a rich cultural history, with The Mowanjum Festival, Teh Boab Festival and Mardi Gras all being held in the town.
Derby hosts a hot semi-arid climate, with a hot wet season with high humidity affected by severe tropical cyclones, and a warm dry season with little rainfall and mild evenings. Derby receives an average rainfall of around 800mm a year, making it a little too dry to be considered a tropical climate.
While mining and tourism are major parts of the Derby economy, it is also home to a significant pastoral industry, with many cattle stations and farms in and around the shire, with a meatworks in town and a beef road from Glenroy Station to Derby being a key piece of infrastructure.
