Dongara Western Australia
Dongara is a large coastal town in the Mid West region of rural Western Australia, just over 50 kilometers from Geraldton, and a part of the larger residential area of Dongara – Port Denison.
The place name Dongara is an anglicised version of the traditional name for the estuary adjacent to the town known as Thung-arra to the local Yamatji people, the traditional owners of the area.
European settlement of the estuary began in the 1850s when a harbourmaster stationed there to look out for ships was granted 60,000 acres of pastoral land, and small farmers took up land around this area on the river flats.
Today, Dongara is a fishing and farming town, and a major hub for those too far south of Geraldton, and is the self anointed “Rock Lobster Capital of Australia”.
Dongara sits within a temperate climate region, with semi-arid influences thanks to how north it is, approximately half way between the Tropic of Capricorn and the city of Perth. The summers are hot and dry, the winters are cool, and it is windy and mostly clear year round, and the town receives just over 350mm of annual rainfall.
In addition to the fishing and shellfish industry, general farming has been the backbone of the Shire of Irwin since the 1850’s, and continues today with crops of canola, pepper and melons, as well as a major mango orchard being established in the rich loam soil in the region.
