Dowerin Western Australia
Dowerin is a town in Western Australia and the home of the the state’s largest and most widely recognised agricultural event; The Dowerin Machinery Field Days; a two day annual event held in the last week of August each year.
The name given to the area now known as Dowerin by the local Aboriginal peoples was “Wuguni”, but Dowerin, also an Aboriginal name, was already in use for the town. The most likely translation is the local word for ringneck parrot’s “dow-arn”.
The town was first established in 1907 after the Government extended the railway from Goomalling to the area and decided to develop a townsite at the terminus.
The popular Dowerin Field Days were first developed in 1965 out of fears by the local shire that Dowerin may become a ghost town, and the event has run ever since.
As with most places in Western Australia when you get more than 100 kilometers from the coast – particularly the further north you get – Dowerin is quite hot and dry, and is home to a semi arid climate, recording just over 360mm of rainfall in the average year.
Outside of the excitement of the annual field days, Dowerin is a typical wheatbelt town, servicing surrounding areas predominantly used for wheat and sheep farming, with other crops and livestock scattered around the shire.
