Dwellingup is a small town in the Darling Range’s timber and fruit growing area of Western Australia, just under 100kms from the state capital.
The Bindjareb Noongar are the traditional custodians of the Dwellingup area and the name comes from the word “dwellingupp” which means place near water.
Dwellingup was first settled in 1910, and has grown into a small town that is popular with tourists, in a region rich with timber and fruit.
It is also the home of the popular Hotham Valley Railway, and is one of the stops on the Bibbulmun Track.
One of the reasons Dwellingup is so popular with fruitgrowers, and also why it is so lush and rich with vegetation, is its significant rainfall. The townsite records an average of more than 1200mm a year, while still having warm and sunny summers due to its Mediterranean climate.
While originally popular for timber, Dwellingup has grown to be a popular fruitgrowing region, with many stonefruit, apples and citrus being grown in the area, by full orchards and hobby farmers alike.
