Fitzroy Crossing Western Australia
Fitzroy Crossing is a small town in Western Australia’s Kimberley Region, more than 2500 kilometers from the state capital of Perth.
Traditionally the area was inhabited by the Banuba people, whose land stretches from Brooking Springs to Napier, and are the river and hill people.
The town wasn’t gazetted until 1975 despite being shown on maps since 1903, and was first settled by Europeans in 1886.
Prone to regular flooding, Fitzroy Crossing received its first bridge in 1935, and the more stable structure used today was built in 1974.
Fitzroy Crossing has a climate that borders on tropical monsoonal and semi-arid. The town is very hot, and often records the hottest temperature in the state, and most of its rainfall comes in the wet season between December and March. Despite its tropical climate and riverside location, Fitzroy Crossing only receives around 550mm of rainfall annually.
Located in the pastoral region, there are cattle stations located in all directions from Fitzroy Crossing, and the town hosts the Annual Fitzroy Crossing Bull Sale, with participants travelling from all across the northern parts of Australia.
