Geraldton Western Australia
Geraldton is a coastal city in the Mid-West Region of Western Australia that sprung up around a major seaport and is an important service and logistics centre for regional mining, fishing, wheat, sheep industries.
Though unclear when Aboriginal people first reached the area around Geraldton, there is evidence of the Amangu people living in the area for at least 40,000 years, as is the case with the Nanda to the north and Badimaya to the east.
Many Europeans sighted or wrecked near Geraldton long before the area was colonised, and the wreck of the Batavia dates back to 1629, some 220 years before the town was settled by British explorers.
Today Geraldton is the largest city in Western Australia north of Perth, and is vying with Albany for the title of the state’s third largest city.
The Geraldton area is home to a Mediterranean climate with a semi-arid influence, with only a little over 50 days of rainfall a year, resulting in a little over 400mm of precipitation annually. Summers are long and hot with cyclonic rainfall occasionally recorded, with cooler winters bringing most of the rain in the region.
While Geraldton itself has made its name as a port city, with tourism and its export industry being its major economy, the areas around Geraldton, of course, contribute to this, with over 2500 tonnes of livestock exported annually, and a whopping two and a half million tonnes of grain.
