Gidgegannup is a local area made up of rural and rural-residential land in the northern and eastern areas of the City of Swan.
The name “Gidgegannup” comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “place where spears are made”.
The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1850s, and the land was mostly used for farming, including horse studs, cattle grazing and fruit growing.
With the main townsite is situated on Toodyay Road, the locality is drained by the north flowing Wooroloo and Gidgegannup Brooks.
Gidgegannup is home to a warm Mediterranean climate region, with summers reaching 40 degrees annually, and every few years winters dipping below freezing. Gidgegannup receives significant rainfall, with an average of just under 1100mm a year, allowing for rich farmable soil and grazing of livestock.
Farming in the area continues to support cattle and fruit growing, but more recently has grown to include emus, alpacas, aquaculture, pecans, olives and goat cheese.
