Great Southern Region Western Australia

The Great Southern Region is one of the nine major agricultural regions of Western Australia, and covers a section of the south coast from Walpole to Bremer Bay, and inland up to Katanning and Jeramungup.

The largest settlement in the Great Southern Region is The City of Albany, though there are many farmers and families across the 40,000 square kilometers the region covers.

The region covers parts of the lands of the Minang, Koreng, Kaneang and Bibbulmen Noongar peoples, who lived there before European settlement in the 1800s.

Most of the Great Southern Region is home to a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm to hot summers, and cool wet winters, and is home to the only part of Western Australia that receves regular – if sparse – snowfalls.

The Great Southern Region is primarily used for livestock farming, dairy farming and crop growing, and is home to some of the most productive cereal grain in the state. The livestock grazing in the region includes both dairy and beef cattle and lamb and wool sheep.
