Halls Creek Western Australia
Halls Creek is a town in the eastern Kimberley region of Western Australia, and the administrative centre for the Halls Creek Shire Council.
The lands now known as Halls Creek has been a part of the history and culture of the Jaru, Kija, Kukatja, Walmajarri, Gooniyandi and other Indigenous people for thousands of years.
Halls Creek was first settled by Europeans looking for grazing runs and minerals in the late 1800’s, and when fold was found, people flocked to the area.
Today, Halls Creek is a major hub for many nearby cattle stations, as well as an important centre for the local indigenous population.
The climate of Halls Creek is a warm semi-arid one, and it averages less than 600mm of rainfall a year, with inconsistent falls from year to year. Most of this rainfall comes in the hotter wet season, from December to march, often going months without rain. Though drier, the dry season gives relief from the soaring temperatures and is much more mild.
The major economic industry in Halls Creek is cattle, with many stations nearby, the town functions as the northern end of the Canning Stock Route, which runs 1850 kilometers through the Great Sandy desert from Halls Creek to Wiluna.
