Hopetoun Western Australia
Hopetoun is a town in the Shire of Ravensthorpe, in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, some 160 kilometers west of Esperance.
The area was traditionally inhabited by the Ngadu and Wadjari people prior to European settlement, who travelled large areas of land in the region. Nearby town Jerdacuttup’s name comes from an Noongar word of unknown origin.
The town gets its name from Governor-General John Hope, and it was established as a town in 1900, though it was originally called Mary Ann Harbour by a whaling master who used to work in the region, who named it after his eldest daughter in 1865.
Today Hopetoun is a town that has seen significant decline since the closure of a nearby nickel mine, though it still has many amenities and serves as a stop on the way to Esperance from Albany.
Hopetoun has a semi-arid climate with a Mediterranean rainfall pattern, averaging high 20’s in summer, and dropping to low teens in the winter, slightly wetter than Ravensthorpe, though still drier than Experance, with an average annual rainfall a touch under 500mm a year.
Since the closure of the Ravensthorpe Nickel Mine, the main use for the land around Hopetoun is broadacre farming, much like the rest of the Esperance region, with wheat and sheep the major agriculture, with small crops of oats, barley and other grains.
