Kalgoorlie Western Australia
Kalgoorlie is a large mining city in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, around 600km east of Perth along the Great Eastern Highway.
The name Kalgoorlie is taken from the Wangai word meaning “place of the silky pears”. The Wangai people are the traditional owners of the Eastern Goldfields, languages including Wangkatja continue to be spoken there today.
Kalgoorlie was established in 1893 during the gold rushes, and it quickly replaced Coolgardie as the largest settlement in the Eastern Goldfields.
As it has been throughout its history, Kalgoorlie continues to be a gold mining town, and is one of the largest mining operations with purely local living employees (no fly-in fly out operations).
Kalgoorlie is home to a semi-arid climate, with scorching hot summers, and cool to cold winters. The average rainfall in Kalgoorlie is just over 250mm a year, and typically falls in a pretty even distribution throughout the year, though is subject to considerable variation year on year.
Despite its strong mining based economy, Kalgoorlie is also home to a range of agricultural operations and farming communities, including livestock such as cattle, as well as broadacre crops of canola, wheat and other grains.
