Kojonup Western Australia

Kojonup is a town in the on the northern border of the Great Southern Region and the Southern Wheatbelt, just under 50km from the town of Katanning.

The Kaneang Noongar people are the traditional owners of the Kojonup area, and the name Kojonup is derived from a hunting axe they used to hunt wild game in the area.

The first European to survey the area was in 1837, however it wasn’t settled until almost a decade later when a town was built to support a military barracks in the area, and it was first farmed by soldiers with settlement grants.

Today, Kojonup supports a host of rich farming communities in the Great Southern and Wheatbelt regions, and has produced several AFL and WAFL footballers.

Kojonup sits on the edge of the steppe and temperate climate regions at the gateway to the Great Southern region, and experiences a reasonable amount more rainfall than  townsites deeper east into the wheatbelt, with an annual rainfall of just over 525mm on average.

The early economy of the town was initially dependent on cutting and transporting sandalwood and kangaroo hunting but by the mid-19th century the wool industry began to boom and by 1906 the shire had 10,500 sheep. By 1989 the shire had seen over 1 million sheep being shorn.

The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops including organic, conventional and genetically modified, and Kojonup has been thrust to the epicentre of the battle in Australia of organic versus genetically modified agriculture.
