Manjimup Western Australia
Manjimup is a town in the South West region of Western Australia, in the karri forests around 200 kilometers from Albany.
The name Manjimup comes from the Bibulmun Noongar name from the area which meant place of manjin, a type of edible reed.
The area was originally intended to be part of the post Word War I settlement scheme, but the land proved hard to clear and the dairy industry collapsed in the great depression.
Today, the area is considered the regional centre of the karri region, and home to the largest shire in the South West region.
Manjimup has a mild Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and warm dry summers, with summer temperatures averaging in the high 20s, and winters bringing plentiful rain, with an annual average precipitation of 994mm.
Timber has long been the town’s major industry, however it has been joined by a range of agricultural pursuits, including fruit and vegetable growers, dairy farms, wool, grain and wineries. The pink lady apple was created in Manjimup and continues to be grown in the area. Manjimup is also the leading Australian-mainland producer of black truffles.
