Menzies Western Australia
Menzies is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, around 725km from Perth, and 125km from Kalgoorlie.
Aboriginal people have lived in the Menzies area since time immemorial, and the local group are the Kaburn Bardu.
Gold was discovered in the area in 1894 two prospectors, one Australian and one Canadian born, took up a lease in the region naming it the “Lady Shenton”.
Gold mining continues in and around Menzies to the present day, and the town includes a hotel, shire office, a nursing post.
Menzies sits in a semi-arid climate region, with hot summers, and cool to cold winters. The average rainfall in Menzies is just over 250mm a year, and typically falls in a pretty even distribution throughout the year, though is subject to considerable variation year on year.
Despite most people in Menzies being employed in mining, education or tourism related jobs, there are still a number of farms and hobby farms within the shire, with grazing cattle or broadacre crops being grown.
