Merredin Western Australia

Merredin is a small town and rural community in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia located roughly halfway between Perth and Kalgoorlie.

Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Nyaki-Nyaki Noongar peoples, and the town’s name comes from what surveyor Charles Cooke Hunt believed he heard the locals call the rock now known as Merredin Peak.

Europeans first began settlement in the 1850s, after initial settlers were unimpressed by its dryness, but it became more popular as a stopping place on the way to the goldfields.

As noted by the Surveyor General when the town was first explored by settlers, Merredin is remarkably dry, averaging only 325mm of rainfall a year, with very few months experiencing multiple days of rainfall. The climate is a semi arid or steppe climate, with hot summers and cool to cold winters, with little rainfall year round.

The agricultural land around Merredin produces 40% of Western Australia’s wheat output. As a focal point for the region, Merredin’s local bulk handling co-operative receives and processes more than a million tonnes of grain every year. The silos at the train facilities to the west of the main town are the biggest of their type in the southern hemisphere.
