Mid West Region Western Australia

The Mid West Region is one of the nine agricultural regions of Western Australia, and is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast inland to arid desert regions.

The three largest towns in the Mid West region – Geraldton, Dongara and Kalbarri – all sit on the coast, and even these receive limited amounts of rainfall annually.

Many of the town and shire names within the Mid West Region are derived from the language groups of the traditional owners of these lands, with a rich and storied history, with some of Australia’s oldest cave painting sites in this region.

Spanning so far inland, the Mid West covers a range of climates and environments, which are all suitable to different types of agriculture, or for some areas mining and fishing are the predominant industries.

Near the coast, annual rainfall of between 400 and 500 millimetres allows intensive agriculture and production of a range of crops including wheat, canola and other grains and pulses, but also mangoes, bananas and other fruits. There are also many sheep and chicken farms throughout the Mid West.
