Mullewa Western Australia
Mullewa is a town and rural hub in the Mid West Region of Western Australia, just under 100 kilometers from the port city of Geraldton, with which it shares administrative duties.
The town is named for Mullewa Spring, which was based on the local Yamatji People’s name for the area, and is said to mean place of fog. The Yamatji people and the nearby Nanda peoples who inhabited the area for over 60,000 years.
Europeans first came to Mullewa in 1869 on pastoral leases for farming, and in the 1890s a railway was build from Geraldton to Mullewa, leading to the town being established in 1894.
Today Mullewa functions as a hub for nearby towns and farming communities, and is one of the few places in Western Australia the wreath flower – a unique looking subshrub – is known to grow in abundance.
Mullewa sits within a semi-arid climate region, with dry, hot summers and mild to cool winters with sparse rainfall. Due to its proximity to the coast, it inherits some of the temperate Mediterranean climate features of Geraldton, despite its low annual rainfall figure of just under 350mm a year.
The areas surrounding Mullewa within the City of Greater Geraldton are strong producers of wheat and other cereal crops, including barley, canola and lupins, and there is also a reasonable livestock trade made up predominantly of wool and sheep.
