Nannup Western Australia
Nannup is a rural shire and town in the South West Region of Western Australia at the crossroads of the Vasse and Brockman highways on the Blackwood River.
Nannup’s name is of Noongar origin, meaning either “stopping place” or “place of parrots”, and was first recorded by surveyors in the 1860s.
The townsite was gazetted in 1889 and a small community began to spring up, with a police station, school and shire office built by 1906.
Nannup is the only town within the large shire of Nannup, and serves as the hub for the many rural properties and communities in the area.
Nannup is home to a mild Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and warm dry summers, with summer temperatures averaging in the high 20s, and winters bringing plentiful rain, with an annual average rainfall of over 900mm.
While there are many agricultural industries within the Shire of Nannup, including wineries, floriculture and fruit and vegetable growers, the economy of the area is primarily based on timber milling and beef cattle farming.
