Newman Western Australia
Newman – originally named Mount Newman – is a town on the border of the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia less than 10km from the Tropic of Capricorn.
Aboriginal occupation of the area extends to around 45,000 years, and the local Martu people comprise about a dozen language groups that extend across the Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts.
Newman is a modern mining town, with homes contrasting with the surrounding reddish desert.
Newman is home to a hot desert climate, with very hot summers and mild winters, with temperatures around or above 40 degrees frequent in the summer months. The annual average rainfall is 329.5 millimetres, but its barrenness results in high evaporation.
As well as being a mining town, Newman is home to several broadacre farming operations, as well as grazing and pastoral runs for cattle, sheep and goats.
