Northampton Western Australia
Northampton is a large rural town just over 50 kilometers north of the City of Geraldton, in the Mid West Region of Western Australia.
The area around Northampton was traditionally inhabited by the Nanda peoples, and there are famous cave paintings at the Bowes River showing a long history of land use and habitation.
Europeans first settled in Northampton in the mid 1800s after lead was found in the area, but the town soon grew to produce more wool and sandalwood as a farming hub for surrounding Mid West farming communities.
Today, Northampton is a major rural hub, and both a mining and farming town, known for its many wildflowers, and just an hour’s drive from Geraldton on the way to Kalbarri.
Northampton experiences a temperate climate with semi-arid influences, with only a little over 50 days of rainfall a year, resulting in a little over 425mm of precipitation annually despite its coastal location. Summers are long and hot, with cooler winters bringing most of the rain in the region.
Northampton services a number of towns in the Shire of Northam, most of which are farming communities, with the major produce being wheat and wool, with a host of other crops including barley, canola, oats and lupins grown in the region.
