Paraburdoo Western Australia

Paraburdoo is a mining and agricultural town near the border of the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions of northern Western Australia.

The town gets its name from an Aboriginal word that was said to mean feathered meat, likely referring to abundant flocks of Little Corella in the area, however it may also mean rock cave from “para-buradoo”.

Paraburdoo was developed in the early 1970s to support local iron ore mining operations and was gazetted as a town in 1972.

The town provides housing to workers of the three nearby mines; the Channar mine, Eastern Range mine and Paraburdoo mine.

Paraburdoo is home to a hot desert climate. In summer the days are very hot and the nights are warm, while in winter the days are warm and the nights are cool to cold. Rainfall is highly variable, mostly coming from storms and tropical cyclones. It falls most often between December and March, with an annual average of just over 300mm.

Most of the agricultural use of the Shire of Ashburton and areas surrounding Paraburdoo is taken up by pastoral leases, running large head of cattle across the mostly barren land. Closer to town the land is primarily used to house mining workers for nearby iron ore mines.

Farm sheds serve a variety of purposes in Western Australia, with such a diverse and strong agricultural industry, and this means a wide range of available farm sheds need to be available for the state’s farmers to choose from and customise.
