Pilbara Region Western Australia

The Pilbara Region is the second largest of Western Australia’s nine agricultural regions, covering over half a million square kilometres of dry, thinly populated land in the northern half of the state.

The Pilbara is best known for its mineral deposits, with many iron ore mines set up in the area and home to the port with the highest tonnage in Australia.

The region is also famous for its ancient history of Aboriginal peoples, the red dirt, and its ancient and stunning landscapes. It is also a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna.

The two predominant climate regions in the Pilbara are arid and tropical, with its location on the Tropic of Capricorn bringing cyclones and thunderstorms from December to may, with long periods from June to November often completely rainless. The Pilbara town of Marble Bar set a world record for most consecutive days exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with a period of 160 days between 31st of October 1923 and the 7th of April 1924.

The Pilbara Region is a mining region when you look at pure economic output, however it would be foolish to ignore the wide spread of cattle stations and farming operations in the region, which use up a significant portion of the land.
