Ravensthorpe Western Australia

Ravensthorpe is a town and shire in the southern part of the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, about half way between Albany and Esperance.

The area was traditionally inhabited by the Ngadu and Wadjari people, who knew the place the town now sits as Kukenarup, which meant place where water always stops.

Europeans first settled in the area in the late 1860s on pastoral leases for grazing cattle and sheep, and the town was founded in 1901. The town is named for the nearby Ravensthorpe Range.

Today the town services the farming regions within the Shire of Ravensthorpe and even smaller towns or communities in surrounding shires.

Ravensthorpe has a semi-arid climate with a Mediterranean rainfall pattern, averaging high 20’s in summer, and dropping to low teens in the winter, with minimal rainfall to show for the cooler, wetter season, with an average annual rainfall of 425mm.

Like much of Western Australia, the main farming in the Ravensthorpe shire is wheat and sheep, with mostly broadacre farming being suitable to the dry region. Other crops include oats, barley, lupins, canola, peas and beans.
