South West Region Western Australia
The South West region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia, with two cities in the area – Bunbury and Busselton. Bunbury is the largest city in the region.
The area covers almost 25,000 square kilometers, and has a population of around 175,000 people, most of these living in Bunbury and Busselton.
The land in this area is used for a wide range of uses, with a strong tourism sector supported by mining, broadacre farming, livestock, dairy, fruit and vegetables and viticulture.
The South West region receives much higher seasonal rainfall than Perth, and is home to a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are generally hot and dry, and despite rainfall typically experienced every month of the year, some parts of the South West Region average over 1000 mm of annual rainfall.
The economy of the South West is very diverse, and has has substantial agriculture, timber, and viticulture industries. It is Western Australia’s second-most popular tourist destination after Perth thanks to its greenery, karri forests and concentration of wineries, particularly in the Margaret River wine region.
