Toodyay Western Australia
Toodyay is a town on the Avon River, in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia, roughly 25kms from the nearby town of Northam.
Toodyay’s name comes from the Ballardong Noongar name for the area “Duidgee”, and it is thought to mean place of plenty.
The first European settlement of Toodyay began in 1836, though the original townsite flooded and was relocated in the 1860s.
Toodyay was known as Newcastle until 1910, when the name was changed to avoid confusion with the city in New South Wales.
Toodyay has a warm Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and hot dry summers, with most years reaching above 40 degrees in the summer and below freezing in the winter. Toodyay’s average rainfall comes in at a mere 430mm a year, however the valleys and rivers nearby allow it to remain rich with vegetation and farmable.
Toodyay is a rich agricultural area, with broadacre agriculture and livestock being important parts of the shire’s economy. Toodyay produces wheat, canola, sheep, cattle and many other food and fibre productions which are used both locally and exported.
