Wagin Western Australia
The town was traditionally inhabited by the Noongar people, and the name comes from nearby Wagin Lake, and means “place of emus” in the traditional language.
The first Europeans began to settle in the area after the construction of the Great Southern Railway in 1889 and the town sprung up around it.
Today, Wagin is one of the largest towns in the southern Wheatbelt, and annually hosts the Woolorama, one of Western Australia’s largest agricultural shows, regularly attractsing over 30,000 visitors.
Wagin has a dry temperate climate, its southern location offset by how far inland it is. The average annual rainfall in Wagin comes to just over 425mm a year, and the summers regularly soar above forty degrees.
The main industries are wheat crops and sheep grazing, as is signified by the Wagin Big Ram or Wagin Giant Ram that was erected in the town in 1985, and the local field day being called the Wagin Woolorama.
