Wannamal Western Australia

The town of Wannamal is the northernmost in the Shire of Chittering, and was built to support graziers in the area in the late 1800s.

Wannamal’s name is taken from the nearby Wannamal Lake, a name of Indigenous Australian origin that is thought to simply translate to “lake”.

The town was finally established in 1908, and the town hall was built in 1912, after the Midland railway line was extended to Wannamal in the 1890’s.

Wannamal today is a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ town as it lies in the back roads and not near a major highway, and is rarely visited by people who don’t live nearby.

The town of Wannamal has a temperate to semi-arid climate. The townsite averages just over 625mm of rainfall a year. Most of this rainfall comes in the cooler winter months, which leads to rolling green hills and valleys, and a popular wildflower season in springtime.

Wannamal is home to a wide range of agricultural industries, including livestock such as cattle and sheep, as well as a strong citrus growing industry. The Chittering Valley just to the south of Wannamal is home to a strong wine region, with several popular wineries that bring tourists into the area.
