Wheatbelt Region Western Australia
The Wheatbelt is one of the nine major agricultural regions of Western Australia, and covers a major portion of the southern half of the state, covering an area upward of 150,000 kilometers bordering the Mid-West, Perth, Peel, Goldfields and Great Southern Regions.
The largest town in the Wheatbelt is The Town of Northam, though there dozens, if not hundreds of small towns and localities over the large agricultural region.
Many of the town and shire names within the Wheatbelt are derived from the language groups of the traditional owners of these lands, with a rich and storied history.
The Wheatbelt is home to five sub-regions, all with slightly different climates and environments, the Avon region, the Central Coast, the Central Midlands, the Central East and the Southern Wheatbelt.
The Wheatbelt is one of the most active agricultural and farming regions in Western Australia, and is the source of nearly two thirds of the state’s wheat and half of its wool, as well as the majority of its oranges, honey, cut flowers and other agricultural and pastoral products.
