Wongan Hills Western Australia

Wongan Hills is a town in the Wheatbelt Region of Western Australia, that shares its name with a range of low flat-topped hills in the Avon region.

“Wongan” is derived from the Indigenous Australian name “wangan-katta” with Wangan meaning hills, but the meaning of katta being unknown.

While the Wongan Hills were first recorded on maps in 1836, the town wasn’t settled by Europeans until the early 1911.

Today the town is a centre for surrounding areas including Ballidu and Cadoux.

Wongan Hills historically had a Mediterranean climate however drying associated with widening of the Hadley cell has shifted the area in recent times to a hot semi-arid climate. The town receives sparing rainfall in the winter months, with an annual average precipitation of 388mm.

Wongan Hills is the centre for many nearby farming communities, and the Wongan region is a prosperous agricultural region with activities focused on sheep, grain and pig-farming.
